CDC report: Uncommon nerve disorder found more in older adults who got RSV vaccines.

The CDC found that a rare nervous system disorder was more common than expected in older adults who got the new RSV vaccines. However, officials still believe the benefits of the vaccines outweigh the risks.

The CDC and FDA are evaluating the risks but are not changing their recommendation that older adults talk to their doctor about the vaccine. Over 10 million older adults have received the Pfizer or GSK RSV vaccine since August.

Health officials estimate about two cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a nervous system disorder, for every 1 million people vaccinated against RSV. A new CDC report found a slightly higher rate, particularly with the Pfizer vaccine.

The CDC had previously reported similar findings about the RSV vaccines and Guillain-Barre syndrome. This syndrome can cause temporary or permanent nerve damage, but most people recover fully.

Around 3,000 to 6,000 people in the U.S. develop Guillain-Barre syndrome each year, often after a viral infection or vaccination. It is more common in older adults, the same group targeted by the new RSV vaccines.
