Prosecutors say Watson was part of a plan to trick people into investing in Ozy Media by making up revenue numbers and bragging about deals that didn't exist. One time, Watson even helped another Ozy executive pretend to be a YouTube executive on a call with potential investors to make Ozy seem more impressive.

Watson says he is innocent and blames other people at Ozy for any lies that were told, while his lawyers say that any misrepresentations were the fault of others. Watson claims he put all his money into Ozy and even had to mortgage his home and drive an old car to keep the company going.

Watson also feels like he is being unfairly targeted because he is a Black entrepreneur and compares his case to that of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, who was also found guilty of fraud. However, unlike Theranos, which offered a product that didn't work, Ozy Media did produce real shows and events, according to Watson.

Ozy Media, founded in 2012, aimed to be a source of news and culture for young people with a global perspective. Although Ozy attracted major advertisers, clients, and grants, it faced financial struggles and resorted to dishonest tactics to stay afloat. The company eventually collapsed in 2021 after a New York Times article exposed their deceptive practices, including the phone call impersonation scheme.
