American Tech Supports China’s Surveillance State

China uses technology to control many people. These people cannot leave their homes or areas easily. Much of this technology came from the United States. American companies helped China build its surveillance system. This system watches and controls people in China.

American companies sold technology to China's police. This happened even after warnings about human rights. The companies made a lot of money from this. Most companies said they followed all the rules. They said they did not break any laws or sanctions.

American systems collect much information on people. This includes texts, calls, and internet use. Police can use this to threaten people. One company, IBM, worked with a Chinese company. They helped design a system to censor the internet.

American tech helped track Uyghurs in Xinjiang. This technology was used to control and assimilate them. One system tagged many as terrorists. Some companies marketed technology for race recognition. They also sold DNA kits designed for specific groups.

Companies often say they are not responsible for misuse. However, some directly sold tools to control citizens. They cited Communist Party ideas. American technology built China's surveillance system. Concerns remain about where the technology will end up.
