Violence against women: a big problem in the UK.
Reading
Violence against women and girls in the UK is very high and is seen as a serious problem like terrorism by police leaders. In the year 2022 to 2023, more than 1 million violent acts against women and girls were recorded, making up 20% of all crimes.
One in six murders during this period was due to domestic abuse. It is estimated that one in every 12 women will experience crimes like sexual offenses, rape, stalking, harassment, or online sexual abuse annually.
Deputy Chief Constable Maggie Blyth called the situation a national emergency and stressed the need for societal change. She described the information on these crimes as shocking and pointed out they are growing more complex each year.
There is increasing concern over how some online figures are pushing young men towards hateful attitudes against women. Police dealing with these crimes are working with anti-terrorism units to find solutions.
Teachers are worried about the negative influence of some social media figures on boys. Although many police officers received new training to handle rape and serious sexual offenses, more support is needed for the overwhelmed criminal justice system.
